Programs & Classes

Adult Literacy: in cooperation with the Literacy Council of St. Joseph County and the South Bend Community School Corporation, provides volunteer tutors for adults who want to improve reading skills or learn English if it is not their native language. Approximately 65% of students enrolled in the library Literacy Program are learning English as a Second Language. Students and tutors meet at least 1-2 hours each week.

GED Preparation Class: offered jointly by South Bend Community School Corporation and Literacy & Outreach Services. The class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:45 p.m.-7:45 p.m. and Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and also 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. To register, please call the Adult Education Department of the School Corporation at 283-7505.

Services

Homebound: delivers books, magazines, videos and audiotapes to individuals who are unable to use the library because of an illness or disability. We make house calls! More information

Physically Disabled: include videos on ADA and wheelchairs and a seated walker are available for use in the library. Literacy & Outreach Services also provides information about area agencies, schools, individuals and organizations assisting people with disabilities.

Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing: A collection of instructional, educational, and entertainment videos in sign language. (Catalog of complete collection available on request). Assistive listening devices and TTY’s are available for loan. Blind and Visually-Impaired: The library’s general holdings includes an extensive Large Print book collection. A collection of Braille games is available for loan (i.e. Scrabble, Uno, Battleship). A computer with a Braille Printer is available for public use. (The Braille Printer translates words typed on a computer into Braille). Various kinds of magnifiers and a Visualtek (reading aid for magnification) are available for patrons to use. More information
